Diane Rehm's May 20th program was on the topic of
alimony and the efforts now underway in a growing number of states to end
permanent spousal support. Instead, many states, as Massachusetts did in 2011, would create formulas to
determine the amount and duration of awards.
During the program, there was a
discussion of the value of divorce mediation to parties interesting in
maintaining control of their divorce and coming up with a workable resolution to their divorce issues. It
was an interesting and informative conversation explaining how mediation gives couples the option to privately negotiate a settlement
without the large investment of time, money and emotion that adversarial
litigation almost always require.
